American Civil War

The American Civil War was fought on the issue of states rights versus those of the Federal Government. The larger issue focused on the question of slavery.

The 1860 U.S. election, led to Abraham Lincoln winning the seat; President Abraham Lincoln, an anti-slavery candidate.

1861 – Outbreak of the American Civil War

1863 – Emancipation Proclamation ends slavery in the United States.

1865 – Abraham Lincoln assassinated on 15th April by John Wilkes Booth, at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, thus bringing an end to the American Civil War.

  1. I’m not sure I am comfortable with honoring Lincoln with the “anti slavery hero” title. In August 1862, Lincoln stated: “If I could save the union without freeing any slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.” Also, the Emancipation Proclamation declared slaves free in the 11 states in rebellion (the Confrederacy) but not in the 4 border states with slavery (Missouri Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware) for fear the such would make them secede and join the Confederacy which would jeopardize the war effort’s success. The real anti slavery republican was John C. Fremont the new republican party’s presidential candidate in 1856. He got 40% of the vote. Early in the war General Fremont neutralized Missouri of effective Confederate military operations and declared all the slaves free in that state. Lincoln recalled him and fired him ending Fremont’s stellar military career. Lincoln probably thought Fremont could successfully challenge him for the presidency in 1864 so he sentenced Fremont to oblivion. Lincoln did not address slavery’s presence in the free states at all. Lincoln’s assassination did not end the Civil War. Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox did.

    1. It is a difficult one, history often refers to him as one who set slaves free. On the other hand he changes his beliefs to suit himself. You would think by now slavery would be eradicated… but I think we are a long way off from that.
